About the Savannah River

The Savannah River travels approximately 301 miles from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. It forms almost the entire natural boundary between Georgia and South Carolina. This waterway provides drinking water to over 1 million people.

General James Oglethorpe established Savannah on a bluff overlooking the river in 1733. Today, millions of visitors walk its 18th-century ballast stone streets. The historic district features converted cotton warehouses that now hold galleries and eateries.

Further upriver, the Augusta Riverwalk offers a quiet brick pathway. Built in 1845 alongside the river, the Augusta Canal is now a National Heritage Area popular for kayaking. Read Best Times to Visit to plan your trip.
